Tell me not, in mournful numbers, 나에게 슬픈 곡조로 말하지마라
Life is but an empty dream!-- 인생은 한낱 공허한 꿈이라고!
For the soul is dead that slumbers, 잠자는 영혼은 죽은 영혼
And things are not what they seem. 만물은 겉 보기와는 다른 것
Life is real! Life is earnest! 삶은 진지한 것! 삶은 엄숙한 것!
And the grave is not its goal; 결코 무덤이 그 목표는 아니다.
Dust thou art, to dust returnest, 너는 흙이니, 흙으로 돌아가라는 그 말은
Was not spoken of the soul. 우리의 영혼을 두고 한 말은 아니다.
Not enjoyment, and not sorrow, 우리의 운명의 끝은
Is our destined end or way; 향락도 슬픔도 아니니
But to act, that each to-morrow 행동하라 오늘보다 내일이
Find us farther than to-day. 더 나아갈수있도록.
Art is long, and Time is fleeting, 예술은 길다지만, 세월은 덧없이 흐르는것
And our hearts, though stout and brave, 오늘 우리의 가슴은 튼튼하고 용감하지만
Still, like muffled drums, are beating 지금 이 순간도 죽음을 향하여 소리없이
Funeral marches to the grave. 행진하고 있음을 아무도 부인하지 못하리
In the world's broad field of battle, 인생의 광대한 싸움터에서
In the bivouac of Life, 인생의 야영장에서
Be not like dumb, driven cattle! 말없이 쫓기는 가축의 무리는 되지 말자!
Be a hero in the strife! 투쟁에 앞장 서는 영웅이 되자!
Trust no future, howe'er pleasant! 아무리 즐거워도 미래는 믿지말자
Let the dead Past bury its dead! 지나간 일은 지나간일로 돌리자!
Act,--act in the living present! 행동하라- 살아있는 현재를 위해서 행동하라
Heart within, and God o'erhead! 가슴속엔 용기가 , 머리위엔 하나님이 계신다
Lives of great men all remind us 위대한 위인들의 생애는
We can make our lives sublime, 우리삶을 거룩하게할수있다는 모범을 남겨주었다
And departing, leave behind us 이들은 또, 이 삶을 뒤에 두고 떠나면서
Footprints on the sands of time; 인생의 모래밭에 발자국을 남겨주었다.
Footprints, that perhaps another, 수많은 우리의 형제들이
Sailing o'er life's solemn main, 이 험난한 인생의 항로를 달리다가
A forlorn and shipwrecked brother, 풍랑을 만나 구조는 끊어지고 절망에 허덕일때
Seeing, shall take heart again. 그들의 발자국을 보고 다시 용기를 얻게되리.
Let us, then, be up and doing, 그러니 우리 모두 일어나 행동하자
With a heart for any fate; 우리 앞에 어떤 운명이 기다리고있다 해도
Still achieving, still pursuing, 이루고 또 추구하면서
Learn to labor and to wait. 일하는것을 배우자. 기다리는것도 배우자
